Variable Coquinas are small clams that are abundant on the beach, right where the surf breaks onto the sand. They are frequently uncovered by waves and then rapidly burrow back into the sand as the waves retreat. They are filter feeders that are specialized to live in this very dynamic habitat. While quite small, they are edible and with a large quantity, they can be boiled to form a broth for soup making.
