The Air Yam, or more commonly known as the Air Potato, is a major invasive species found throughout the state. Native to Asia, it was introduced to Florida in 1905 and since then has become one of the most invasive plants in the state. Growing up to 8 inches in a day, it is a twining vine that can grow up to 70 feet in length and totally engulf small trees and shrubs. It can also disrupt natural fire regimes by acting as a bridge and spreading fire. While they are a type of yam or potato, this species is toxic and should not be eaten! Recent efforts to control this species through biological controls have been fairly successful with the introduction of a beetle, the Air Potato Leaf Beetle (Lilioceris cheni).
