Dense-spike Blackroot, often just called Blackroot, is a common plant of sandy pinelands of the southeast. The conical shaped inflorescence produces many flowers, typically about 50 per head, but the flowers themselves are rather inconspicuous. They are quite common throughout Florida and easy to identify, but due to their less than showy flowers, they are often overlooked. As you might expect, the name is derived from the dark colored roots.
