The Florida Garden Spider is a large spider of pinelands and woodlands. The large webs are strong and most spiders create a white zigzagged pattern, sometimes form a large cross or “X” in the middle of their web. This is called a “stabilimentum” and its function is still debated. Several hypothesis exist including web stabilization, web visibility for birds, reflecting light to attract prey, or camouflage the actual spider.
