Southern Cattails are one of two species of cattail that are found in Florida and are quite common. They are found throughout most of the state and are native. However, they are considered an invasive species throughout much of the Everglades due to their rapid expansion and displacement of the sawgrass that historically has dominated the prairies and wetlands of the Everglades. This expansion and invasion has been made possible by the influx of phosphorous into the Everglades system through runoff and fertilizer use.
