Buttonwood is a common coastal plant of south Florida and closely associated with the mangrove forests. Often considered a mangrove, it is far less salt tolerant than the other mangroves and typically grows on the upland edges of mangrove forests. It was a major source of charcoal in south Florida, particularly along Florida Bay, for early settlers.
