The Gallinipper is a large mosquito with a fierce bite that has such a wide reputation across the southeast it has been featured in songs and folktales. It is one of the few mosquitos with predatory larvae that specialize on other mosquito larvae. It is found across the entire eastern part of the country. It feeds primarily on mammals and can be a pest when in large numbers. While it has tested positive for several diseases, there hasn’t been any research demonstrating that it acts as a bridge host and transfers diseases to humans.
