The Longnose Spider Crab is one of two spider crabs found on the grass flats of Florida. While these crabs are rather ugly, the young crabs will decorate their carapaces (shells) with algae to help blend in with the sea grasses and avoid being eaten. They are important scavengers that eat plant matter, dead animals, and algae. Unlike Blue Crabs and Stone Crabs, they are not typically eaten by humans and have no commercial fishery.
